FAQ

WHAT IS SEX THERAPY/COUNSELING

Sex therapy is a way for an individual or a couple to resolve issues or problems that are causing them some level of distress in their sexual life. It consists of a fair amount of talking, breath work, mining for images, education, role playing, exploring how and when the problem began and discussing other treatments already tried.

DO I HAVE TO GET NAKED?

No, definitely not! And I wonʼt either!! There is no physical contact or touching involved in this type of sex therapy/counseling. On a rare occasion a referral might be made to a sex surrogate, if you and I feel it would be appropriate and beneficial.

HOW LONG DOES THERAPY LAST?

That depends on the nature of the problem, how long it has been going on, how often you come in and how motivated you are to resolve the issue. Initially we will discuss your goals and then periodically review them to see if you are moving forward towards accomplishing what you set out to. This type of therapy can bring up some painful things which sometimes cause people to want to stop counseling-just when they are making their biggest breakthroughs. I will encourage you to continue, but you are the boss and I feel each one of us has the inner wisdom to know when we are done with therapy.

WHAT TYPES OF PROBLEMS DO YOU TREAT?

Some of the common problems people present with are:

  • Problems with sexual desire or libido (individuals and couples)
  • Mismatched sexual desire or desire discrepancy (when one partner wants to engage sexually more than the other and it is causing discord in the relationship)
  • Problems with orgasm
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Sexual problems resulting from pregnancy or the postpartum period
  • Issues with erectile problems and early(premature) ejaculation

DO YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATION?

There are some instances where we may agree to try certain medications. As a Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Midwife, this is medically and legally within my scope of practice. I will not, however, prescribe any psychiatric medications, but instead will make appropriate referrals as needed.

IS MY COUNSELING CONFIDENTIAL?

Counseling is completely confidential, except in a few, very rare situations, which I would be happy to enumerate at one of your first visits. If you are seeing any other kind of therapist you and I may decide together that sharing some information may be beneficial to achieving your goals.

HOW IS PAYMENT HANDLED?

At this time I am accepting cash or check as payment. I would be happy to give you a receipt or superbill which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. I believe everyone who is motivated to work on their sexual problems should receive treatment, so in certain cases my standard fee can be negotiated.
