OUCH! It Hurts When I Have Sex
Posted on October 10, 2014
There are many different reasons both women and men may experience painful intercourse during their lives. If it’s a very rare, random occurrence then it probably doesn’t need any special attention. But if it’s recurring and distressing, then you probably should seek help from a health care provider well versed in treating sexual pain issues. Some common reasons people have pain with intercourse are:
*vaginal, pelvic or bladder infections
*hypertonic pelvic floor muscles
*vaginal changes related to menopause
*injuries or nerve damage
*constipation or IBS
*history of physical or emotional trauma
*anatomical/structural problems
*sensitivity to everyday products such as soaps, fabrics, dryer sheets, detergents etc
Sexual pain can be a very big challenge, whether you are single or in a relationship. Some of the treatments and diagnoses can be very simple and straightforward with quick resolution. Other times resolution can be much more evasive. Often a multidisciplinary approach will be needed, possibly involving a primary health care provider or ob/gyn specialist, physical therapist and a psychological counselor.
Persevere because a happy, pain free, fun sex life is what you deserve and what you can look forward to if you seek treatment with qualified, caring professionals.
